Today, March 17, marks St. Patrick’s Day.  People everywhere will be donning green to celebrate this familiar Irish holiday. The 17th of March every year remembers St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland and one of Christianity’s most famous figures.  But did you know that St. Patrick was British and not Irish? And that BLUE was the color associated with the holiday according to historians.  Green became common in the 1600’s and 1700’s when the clover became symbolic for nationalism.    It’s True!

Did you know that the very first St. Patrick’s Day parade around the globe was held in New York City in 1766?  People of Ireland historically chose a religious observance while Americans go with more secular activities to commemorate the occasion, though the Irish certainly celebrate in a variety of ways.  It was only after the 1970’s that all pubs in Ireland were closed because it was considered a religious holiday.

Many of us no matter where we live will celebrate with beer, corned beef, cabbage, shepherd’s pie, and all things Irish. We found some great St. Patty’s Day recipes surfing the ‘net and want to share with our readers.  Take a peak and see what looks appealing to you – AND don’t forget to wear your green (or blue, if you want to be historically correct)!
