From the Mother’s Day Series: “Through Mine. Through Hers. Through Theirs.” A Mom’s Project of beauty, self-worth and unconditional love created by Lorna Dancey of Lorna Dancey Photography.

Through her eyes, she sees the chubby girl she used to be looking back in the mirror. Even when people tell her she is beautiful, she has a hard time believing what they are saying. She has the drive to create success in herself and help others, but at times she feels she has set the bar too high thus creating unattainable goals for her and her children.

She struggles with her patience. She feels this impacts her children because it’s difficult to adjust to their pace at times. As a single mom, she feels like it’s not an option to allow herself to fall apart because there are too many who depend on her. She feels, “If I wasn’t this way with all my strengths and weaknesses, I would be another way with a different set of strengths and weaknesses because there is no such thing as perfect. Once we see that everyone has their own set of strengths and weaknesses, it’s easier to own who you are.”

Through my eyes, I first said, “Wow!  She has the best smile ever!” It’s not a smile that worries about the wrinkles it will cause in time, it’s a smile that lights up her whole face. Her smile extends to her eyes and even causes a slight crinkle on her nose which to me, is a telltale sign to the authenticity of it. I have also noticed her zest for life.  She is a whirlwind of energy and ambition, she can and will do anything she sets her mind to.

When I asked these girls what they love about their mama, they shyly giggled and looked at each other to see who was going to say something first. They told me she is pretty and smells soooooo good! They love when they all go for walks, followed by snuggles at bedtime and stories from their favorite books. They love her cooking and when she plays the piano and sings for them. They think she is funny and love to hear her laugh. Most of all, they’re thankful because she takes them to all their activities.

The Mom Project:  ‘Through Mine, Through Tours, Through Theirs’ was created out of teaching self-love.  As a photographer, Lorna Dancey wanted to inspire all Mom’s to be kind to themselves and see the good in everything they do and in every way they love. Lorna asked Mom’s one-by-one how they saw themselves. She then brought their children into the studio to share what they loved about their Mom. The results at times were life-changing.  She wanted each mom to see not what they saw as a woman or mother, but, in fact, what she saw. Most importantly, she wanted each Mom to celebrate themselves through the eyes of her own children and to see the importance of who they are so their children will do the same for themselves.
